Cyclepath from Chatteris to Sutton would be ‘waste of money’ says councillor
A councillor has branded proposals to build a cycleway from Chatteris to Sutton as a “waste of money”.
Cllr Alan Gowler made the claim at Tuesday night’s town council meeting.
He said he drives the route every day and has noticed that very few if any use the existing cycleway from Sutton to Ely.
“The Sutton to Ely cycleway that cost millions is not used or used very poorly. I have seen one or two people biking along it and I go that way every day. In my mind, it is a disgraceful waste of money and I can only see another one being exactly the same,” he said.
He added: “There are better ways of spending S106 money than building this cycleway.”
Cllr James Carney agreed and said there would probably have been more of an appetite for the Chatteris to Sutton cycleway if the Mepal centre was still open.
The proposal came up under a report from the council’s leisure and general purposes committee meeting held last month.
In the end, it was agreed not to take the cycleway proposals any further.
