Another 'Good' Ofsted rating for Sutton Bridge Westmere Primary School

Pupils and staff at a primary school are over the moon after getting top marks from inspectors.

Sutton Bridge Westmere Primary School has received another ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted inspectors following a visit in November.

It was praised for pupils behaviour and enjoyment of lessons along with the school’s effective curriculum and the high expectations of staff.

The school has devised an improvement plan which will look at phonics along with the development of the curriculum for geography, physical education (PE) and design technology.

This is a second Good rating in a row for Westmere - which has come a long way since 2013 when it was rated as ‘requires improvement’.

Head teacher Karyn Wiles said the rating was a ‘fantastic achievement’ especially during the last two years with the challenges posed by Covid in education.

She said: “The children here at Westmere are absolutely amazing. It is fantastic that the inspection team identified how brilliant their behaviour is in the classroom and in the playground.

“They highlighted the hard work the teaching staff have put in and the fact that the children are happy to come to school.

“The secret of our success has to be the amazing team.

“The last two years have been incredibly challenging for anyone working in education so for all the effort of every member of staff has put in to be recognised is amazing.”

The report recognised that pupils behaviour and that parents and carers were happy with Westmere.

It states: “Pupils enjoy being at school. They like to learn and play with their friends. Pupils know the staff care for them. They said that they feel safe and that they know there is always a member of staff they can speak to if they are worried about anything. Leaders prioritise pupils’ well-being.”

Inspectors say that leaders are reviewing the curriculum which is effective in some subjects.

The report states that reading is a priority and that the maths curriculum is well organised. It states: “Leaders have set out the order in which pupils learn new knowledge, so that pupils build their understanding and skills securely.”

Inspectors said relationships between children and adults were positive.

They added that staff create a respectful environment and care about children’s personal development.
