Arlo, rescued from Romanian ‘kill shelter’, has been in kennel near Wisbech for 1,000 days

A dog who was rescued from a Romanian ‘kill shelter’ has now been in kennels for more than 1,000 days.

Arlo is a five-year-old Carpathian shepherd cross who was brought to the UK in February 2020 by the charity Lotus Stray Rescue.

He was found in Romania, where the abundance of stray dogs has led to overpopulated shelters – more commonly referred to as ‘kill shelters’ because of the fate that many of them face.

When Arlo was found, Lotus Stray Rescue had a family lined up and ready to take him on.

However, after the flight was booked and paid for his new family pulled out, starting his lengthy kennel stay at Willowdale Farm kennels near Wisbech.

This outdoor-loving dog is happiest when patrolling the paddock and playing with his toy balls.

The rescue charity believes that a rural or farm environment would be best suited for Arlo because his breed is usually used for guarding livestock, so it is in his nature.

Alternatively, a child and pet-free home would be ideal for this cheerful chap.

Laura Skingle, of Lotus Stray Rescue, said: “If Arlo were taken on by someone, we would definitely have tears of joy and relief. It would be a magnificent day, one we feared would never come. You don’t have to commit straight away, we appreciate the dog that he is.”

Weighing almost 50kg, Arlo is a strong dog, meaning he will need an owner who can cope with that.

Laura added: “He’s been here for such a long time, it’s almost like you feel sorry for him, you start to wonder if there is going to be anyone ever who will take him.”
