Councillors call for more double yellow lines and improvements to lighting in Whittlesey

Councillors have raised matters that they think should be looked into for Whittlesey.

During Thursday evening’s council meeting, councillors discussed matters that have arisen in the area that need looking into.

Cllr Barry Wainwright put forward to the others the widely-voiced concerns of residents of Whittlesey and the villages about the apparent dramatic reduction in lighting levels for pedestrians following the introduction of the new LED street lights.

Cllr Dee Law also said she has received reports on this matter and mentioned that a short while ago, and mentioned a near miss where a silent electricc car had nearly hit a couple crossing the road in the dark.

She went out to see how bad it was for herself, adding: “I didn't feel safe because the pavement is so uneven and I could not see my footing.”

Another proposal that was put to the council was from Cllr Laws for double yellow lines from the T-junction of Gracious Street to 29 Windmill Street.

She said: “I have had several complaints, and it is not just recent. This is ongoing, and there is a certain area and it will get cluttered by a Chinese takeaway as well; they park on the pavement, road, and in front of driveways.”

She mentioned some areas are very narrow in terms of where people are parking, and if emergency services, such as an ambulance or a fire engine, need to get through, they will not be able to.

She said: “The worrying thing now is that where there are a section of double yellow lines, they are now parking opposite.”

She said there should be double yellow lines on both sides.

Cllr Laws said last week the police did ticket a van that has been continuously parking on the T-junction.”

However, other councillors suggested putting in this proposal for LHI (local highways improvements) with other areas that they think need looking at in the area.

It was agreed to write to the county council to raise the concerns over both matters.
