Drink driver caught after Wisbech collision

A drink driver who caused a collision while more than three times the legal limit has been banned for more than two years.

Renatas Dargevicius, 56, was arrested in Churchill Road, Wisbech, on April 28 after being involved in a collision with another car.

At about 10.45am, Dargevicius had pulled out of the junction of Churchill Road and Elm Road in his Vauxhall Astra, into the path of a Nissan Micra.

Both drivers did routine breath tests, with Dargevicius registering 115 – more than three times the legal limit of 35.

He was later charged with drink driving, after providing an evidential sample of 108 in custody, which he admitted in court.

Dargevicius, of Edinburgh Drive, Wisbech, appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he was banned from driving for two years and two months, and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

PC Fran Plitsch, who investigated, said: “Thankfully no one was injured in the collision but there is absolutely no excuse for drink driving.

“I would encourage anyone who knows someone who gets behind the wheel under the influence to report it to us via our confidential hotline.”

Cambridgeshire Constabulary operates a dedicated, confidential hotline – 0800 0320845 – which is available 24/7 and allows the public to report concerns about someone believed to be driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Information about drink driving, the law and the penalties, can be found on the force’s dedicated road safety information webpages.
