Elections 2023: Results are coming thick and fast in Fenland District Council election
Two newly elected Fenland councillors paid tribute to their challengers saying it was good to have opposition.
Maureen Davis and her fellow Conservative David Connor were elected with overwhelming majorities to represented Doddington and Wimblington for the next four years.
The pair faced strong opposition from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats having been elected unopposed for the past eight years.
Making her acceptance speech Maureen said: “It is nice to have had people standing against us – last time we didn’t have any opposition and its nice to know how well we are doing.”
David echoed her sentiments and said it was good to see voters putting their faith in them.
Full result: Katie Clark (Lab) – 256; David Connor (Con) – 708; Maureen Davis (Con) – 732; Liam O’Rourke (Lib Dem) – 218; Phil Snowdon (Lab) – 246. Turn out 30.90%.
The result for Whittlesey South was as follows: Peter Bibb (Ind) – 337; Maria Bocca (Con) – 432; Roy Gerstner (Ind) – 472; Kay Mayor (Con) – 537. Turn out 30%.
Those elected were Kay Mayor and Roy Gerstner however the only candidate at the count was Peter Bibb who said he was sad to see such a low turn out and said all parties needed to look at addressing voter apathy.
Leverington and Wisbech Rural result saw the Conservatives continue to win with newcomer Brenda Barber taking one of the three seats up for grabs.
Fellow Tories and long-serving councillors Sam Clark and Chris Seaton took the other two seats.
They had opposition from Labour, two Alliance for Democracy and Freedom candidates and a candidate who gave no party on his ballot paper.
The full result was: Benedict Allen (Lab) – 406; Brenda Barber (Con) – 818; Sam Clark (Con) – 926; Charles Cutler (no party) – 167; Hermien Dyer (Alliance for Democracy and Freedom) – 215; Mark Dyer (Alliance for Democracy and Freedom0 – 209; Chris Seaton (Con) – 889. Turn out 30.07%.
The Liberal Democrats were celebrating after winning two seats in Parson Drove and Wisbech St Mary.
Gavin Booth who has been returned for a fourth time as a Lib Dem represented paid tribute to all the staff who have carried out the count and all those who voted for him.

There were three seats up for grabs and the third seat went to also long-serving councillor Tory Michael Humphrey.
Full result was: Gavin Booth (Lib Dem) – 706; Diane Cutler (Lib Dem) – 617; Anthony Georgiou (Con) – 552; Michael Humphrey (Con) – 688; Rasa McGill (Lib Dem) – 342; Sebastian O’Keefe (Lab) – 194; Clayton Payne (Con) – 495.
