Cambridgeshire families ‘Get Activated’ this summer with hundreds of fun events
Families across Cambridgeshire are in for a treat this summer with the launch of Get Activated, the countywide summer activity campaign.
The campaign kicked off with a Woodland Wander, an event hosted by the Cambourne Child and Family Centre in the local nature reserve. Cambridgeshire County Councillor Bryony Goodliffe, chair of the children and young people committee, attended and joined in the fun.
There are hundreds of free and low-cost activities for families with children under the age of 13, run by the county and district councils and their partners, including many options for play, cycling, walking, sports and activities to keep families busy, entertained and having fun.
These include the Cambridgeshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge, the Cambridgeshire Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, and a range of activities hosted at the council’s child and family centres, with sessions focusing on the ‘50 Things to Do Before You’re Five’ app.
At March library you can find Games Galore on offer on the fourth Saturday of the month and it is suitable for children of all ages, it is free and you don’t need to book.
Meanwhile, Wisbech Child and Family Centres – there are messy play sessions on August 16, 23, and 30 at the Wisbech South Child and Family Centre, Elizabeth Terrace – you need to book by calling 01945 482989 and they run from 10am to 11am. There are family buggy walks on August 16 and 30 and they start from 10am at the Wisbech South Child and Family Centre, there is no need to book.
Also at the Wisbech South Child and Family Centre on Tuesday, August 20 there is a Frozen pop-up session where children can help make their own Olaf and adventure into the unknown by creating a snowstorm.
It runs 10am to 11am and it is £2 per family, families on low income free, cash on the day. Suitable for under fives.
On Wednesday, August 28, there is an animals encounter day at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech from 10am to 11am and 11.15am to 12.15pm, ideal for children aged 10 and over, it’s a chance to meet reptiles and enjoy craft activities. To book call 01945 482989.
On Thursday, August 15 at Peckover House on North Brink Wisbech, there is an opportunity for nature lovers to join a morning of discovery, adventure and fun in the house’s garden. Meet outside the gates at 9.30am its £2 per family, free for families on low income. No need to book.
As part of the campaign, this year will also feature ‘Get Activated on Tour’, where the council will spotlight activities in each district, so be sure to follow the council’s social media to keep up to date.
By championing affordable outdoor family activities that encourage active travel, physical activity and wellbeing in various local settings and communities, this campaign significantly contributes to Cambridgeshire County Council’s vision of creating a greener, fairer and more caring county for our children and young people.
At the Oasis Child and Family Centre in St Michael’s Avenue, Wisbech, there is a treat for Peppa Pig fans on Thursday, August 29 with a chance to join jumping in muddy puddles with Peppa, explore@Dine-Saw' with George and have fun adventures with Miss Rabbit. Children had the opportunity to explore different kinds of play amongst the trees and there were lots of big smiles during the session.

There are hundreds of activities across the county that are free or low cost to keep everyone busy and having fun during the summer holidays. I’d encourage as many people as possible to sign up.”
