Fenland foodbanks close to callers due to rising infection rate of virus

The rising number of virus infections has forced the closure of the area's foodbanks to people calling in.

Announcing the decision in a Facebook post a spokesman said: "It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to announce the closure of all our distribution centres until at least the end of this month.

"We have stayed open through two lockdowns, but the current rising rates of infection mean we have to do the right thing to protect our volunteers and clients, and close our doors.

"The distribution centres at Ely, March, Chatteris, Waterbeach, Soham, Haddenham and Cottenham will all be closed with immediate effect.

"But we are still here to support you, and will be delivering your parcels directly to your homes. If you need a parcel, please email info@ely.foodbank.org.uk with your name, address and the number of people in your household, as well as any special requests such as cleaning/hygiene items and pet food (subject to availability).

"You will, as usual, need a voucher (unless it is your first time using us), which can be obtained by phone from all the usual sources (schools, GPs, housing officers, family workers, churches, Citizens Advice Bureau).

" If you need help with getting a voucher, or cannot email us, you can call us on 01353468626.

"We look forward to seeing you again in our centres on the other side of this. In the meantime, please don't go hungry: we are still here to help with food and signposting to other support agencies."
