Four fire crews called to cow rescue at Guyhirn
It took four fire crews using specialist equipment over four hours to rescue a cow stuck in the river on the A47 at Guyhirn.
Fenland's neighbourhood policing team spotted the stranded animal and alerted their colleagues in the fire service at around 11.19am on Tuesday (22).
Crews from Wisbech, March, Dogsthorpe and Huntingdon attended the incident, which a fire service spokesman described as "challenging" due to the tidal nature of the River Great Ouse.
Specialist firefighters used in water equipment to assist getting the cow to the water’s edge and firefighters worked with the farmer to rescue the cow from the water.
Crews returned to their stations by 3.45pm.
It was the second time in two days that fire crews had been called to the area to help an animal stranded in the river. A foal had to be pulled from the water on Monday (21).
A fire service spokesperson commented: “Incidents like this can be very time consuming. We would encourage all animal owners, big or small, based near our rivers, lakes, or water sources, to make sure their boundary fences and gates are secured to prevent further such occurrences and avoid curious animals getting into mischief by the water."
