Fundraising success sees Suzanne Lyons shed her locks for her hedgehog rescue in Walpole St Peter

Dedicated hedgehog rescuer Suzanne Lyons has shed her long blonde locks after a three day fundraiser saw her hit a £500 target for her Walpole St Peter sanctuary.

The 47-year-old promised to have her cut off in aid of the Little Princess Trust if three days of fundraising brought in the cash for essential work at Suzanne's Hedgehog Rescue.

With just hours to spare the £500 target was reached and as promised Suzanne made a quick hairdressers appointment and she had 12inches cut off her locks.

The weekend's fundraiser was to help pay for major works at the rescue before winter sets in. among the projects in need of cash was the recovering of the over-wintering shed, which houses the sick, injured and rescued animals over the winter months until it is time to release them in the spring.

The cost of the new roof is £1,400.

A further £150 was needed to replace the shading on the outdoor enclosure, which was badly damaged last October when a neighbour's bonfire accidentally spread.

The rescue's CCTV system is also in need of replacing thanks to a faulty fan which makes it over heat. That is expected to cost around £500.

On her Gofundme page set up for the weekend's appeal Suzanne explained: "If we reach our target of £500 I will have my hair cut off, which will be sent to make wigs for children with cancer."

Posting a picture of her locks ready to go off to the Little Princess Trust Suzanne explained she had lost her own hair to alopecia at the age of 21.

She said: "Hair ready and packed up to go off to The Princess Trust - if you know anyone with long hair that would like to donate it for this wonderful cause to make wigs for children with cancer please look them up - dyed hair is OK providing it is of a natural colour.

"Loosing my hair at 21 to alopecia I can't imagine loosing it at an earlier age to cancer - it would have been lovely to have been able to have a nice wig like these, sadly the NHS wigs back then were not that great."

Suzanne set up her hedgehog rescue six years ago and in that time she has had nearly 600 through the doors in need of care before most being release back into the wild.

Among the hedgehogs she has cared for were two rescued from Wisbech after being used as footballs in two separate incidents in the town in autumn 2017.

Bob was rescued from a group of children who were using as a football while Spooky was not only kicked like a football by a group of men he also had a tar-like substance poured over him before being rescued by a homeless woman who looked after him until he could be seen by a vet on the morning after Halloween.

Suzanne's Hedgehog Rescue relies wholly on public donations to carry out its work.
