FURTHER UPDATE: Keep windows and doors closed warning from fire chief at scene of major Fenland blaze
Residents living in the path of black smoke coming from a major fire in Fenland have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed.
Posting an update on the situation at luncthime today at the Data Shredders industrial unit in Eastwood End, Wimblington, Group Commander Dave Lynch, of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue, said fire crews had managed to surround the blaze and were working to stop it spreading.
In the video posted to social media he advised people living close to the site to keep the windows closed because of the smoke emanating from the incident.
More than 50 firefighters from across three counties have been tackling the massive fire at the unit just off the A141 March bypass, which has been forced to close to traffic for a number of hours - it continues to be closed.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area or find an alternative route while the fire crews tackle.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at just before 10am this morning to a well developed fire on Eastwood Industrial Estate in Wimblington. Crews from around the county, along with crews from Norfolk fire and Lincs Fire and Rescue are at the scene. Please avoid the area where possible.”
