Gallery: Dispersal order put in place as hundreds of car enthusiasts descend on Tesco car park in Wisbech
Police acted to close down a private car meet organised by Velocity Car Club in Wisbech amid claims of anti-social behaviour.
Hundreds of cars descended on the Tesco Extra car park in Cromwell Road on Saturday night as members of over 17 clubs brought along their pride and joy for the static meet up.
Entitled 'Saturday Night Mayhem' the event attracted club members from all over the area and further afield including Cambridge, Peterborough and Rutland.
However, the Wisbech Neighbourhood Policing Team said they were called to the event after concerns were raised by nearby residents and shoppers, who reported drivers were carrying out 'burn outs' and had engines revving
Posting to their Facebook page Fenland Police said: "Due to complaints and concerns for the safety of members of the public, a dispersal order was put in place and those in attendance were asked to leave.
“Vehicles left the area and there were no other complaints. The dispersal order remained in place overnight. It was just the odd few people who spoilt it.”
Velocity Car Club who organised and advertised the event had warned those attending: "Static event, we can’t tell you what to do but just don’t be stupid, keep it safe."
Adding the disclaimer: "Velocity Car Club takes no responsibility for any damages, injuries or actions of individuals at its events. We only organise private meetings, individuals turn up at their own risk.
"We do not organise any illegal events such as street racing and drifting, we only post a postcode. We have no influence in what happens at the postcode, drivers are responsible for their own actions anywhere."
This is the second year running the club has organised a meet in Wisbech the last one held in August 2020 attracted over 300 cars and the organisers were hoping to build on that by attracting even more this year.
