Historic St Peter's Church in Wisbech was alive to the sound of music and laughter on Saturday for a special concert in memory of stalwart member Lesley Mardle.

The former headteacher, who died in 2020, played a major role within the church and was instrumental in drawing up early plans for a summer concert as part of a major Heritage Lottery funded project which saw toilets and kitchen installed in St Peter's along with essential repairs to the building itself.

The memorial concert organised by Cynthia Maxey with the help of Val Spriggs included a performance by Three's Company - the theatre group of which Lesley was a member. They performed the 'Seven ages of Lesley' - loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Seven Ages of Man' and told her life story.

There were performances too from the Angles Theatre's youth theatre group RATz and as well as an excerpt from an Angles cast member of Shirley Valentine, a role Lesley once played.

There was also a host of "simply stunning music" which wowed the audience which was made up of people who knew and loved Lesley either through her career in teaching or through theatre or the church, among them were her husband John and their sons Tim and Rob.

The exact amount raised is not yet known but it is likely to be around £1,200.

As well as the performances the church was also filled with exhibitions of work carried out by local school children as part of the National Heritage Lottery Project aimed at making St Peter's a church fit for the future.

There were exhibitions of photography and art workshops too.

Val said: "It was an absolutely magical evening. The music was simply stunning. The performances were full of laughter and all in all it was a very fitting tribute to Lesley.

"We are now busy planning future events, which have been made possible thanks to the lottery project."
