Former PM Liz Truss is out as Labour wins South West Norfolk by small majority

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss has been ousted from her South West Norfolk constituency after Labour swept to victory by a narrow margin.

The result, one of the later ones to be called, came at around 6.30am after a long night of speculation over Ms Truss’s future as a Member of Parliament with rumours circulating that she was out from early on in the counting process.

She lost out to Labour’s Terry Jermy, by just over 600 votes with him polling 11,4847 votes and Ms Truss taking 11,217.

Independent, and former Conservative, James Bagge together with Toby McKenzie for Reform helped seal Ms Truss’s fate.

Reform took third place with a respectable 9,958 votes while Mr Bagge came fourth polling 6,282.

The Liberal Democrats Josie Ratcliffe beat the Green Party’s Pallavi Devulapalli by almost 800 votes to come fifth, while the remaining three candidates did not manage to poll 1,000 votes between them.

Earl Elvis of East Anglia, the Monster Raving Loony Party polled 738; Gary Conway of the Heritage Party, 160 and Lorraine Douglas for the Communist Party of Britain just 77 votes

Ms Truss, who arrived late to the count and then kept her fellow candidates and the returning officer waiting on stage ahead of the result being announced, had previously enjoyed a majority of just over 26,000 in 2019.

She stood stoically on stage having been slow handclapped for her tardy appearance alongside the other candidates as she heard her fate confirmed by West Norfolk Council’s returning officer. She then gave winner Mr Jermy a swift congratulatory handshake before fleeing the hall at Lynnsport in King’s Lynn where the votes had been counted for both her constituency and neighbouring North West Norfolk.

Ms Truss was almost hounded out of the building as she made a hasty exit pursued by the media and remaining firmly tightlipped making no comment on the result as she was bustled into a waiting car.

The count got underway at around 2.45am and it had been long wait for the final result to be called.

Ms Truss joins a raft of Tory big guns who have endured defeat overnight they include Jacob Rees-Mogg, Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt.

In North East Cambridgeshire former Health and Environment Secretary Steve Barclay was celebrating victory but he saw his majority from 2019 almost halved as Reform stormed into second place ahead of Labour.
