Gill making cautious boxing return
Chatteris featherweight boxer Jordan Gill is looking forward to getting back in the gym.
‘The Thrill’ was scheduled to fight at the end of March on the undercard of the David Avanesyan v Josh Kelly fight, but then the COVID-19 lockdown struck.
And the 25-year-old, who has won 24 of his 25 fights, has been feeling the frustration more than most fighters after misisng a chunk of last year due to health reasons.
But a relaxtion on lockdown rules means the British Boxing Board of Control has told fighters they can make a cautious return.
Gill told the Citizen: “I have been keeping myself fit running and shadow boxing but now with the relaxation of the rules I am hoping to get back into the gym and start sparring in the next few weeks.
“It would take me until July for me to be ready to fight.
“I have been having conversations with Matchroom for a while and I am hoping that I will be able to announce some big news shortly.
“I really feel overdue a big fight.”
At the moment the British Boxing Board of Control is saying training should take place outdoors if at all possible.
If in a gym, there must be ventilation, social distancing and high standards of personal hygiene.
Currently the Board still do not recommend sparring.
Although they accept some aspects of training do result in time spent by two individuals within a two-metre distance of one another, they recommend that this time is kept to a minimum.
Pad work is allowed but the trainer should use personal protective equipment such as a fluid-resistant face mask, full face visor and latex-free disposable gloves.
