Gold for Chatteris and silver gilt for Benwick as Anglia in Bloom results are announced
Hardworking volunteers in towns and villages have been celebrating this week with the announcement of the annual Anglia in Bloom results.
There was joy for the Chatteris in Bloom team as the town once again picked up a gold award in its category - it will now be a case of wait and see how Chatteris fares when the Britain in Bloom results are announced next month.
Tina Prior, chair of Chatteris in Bloom, said: "Thank you to everyone involved in this year's campaign. The judges made special mention to head gardener, Tor Leifsen. We were pipped at the post by Brandon for the title of Best Town, congratulations to them."
The town had entries in other categories in the regional competition including best sustainable planting - this featured the War Memorial Beds; Best garden for special needs - the sensory garden project and Best sheltered accommodation - The Gables; Best pub/restaurant category - the Cross Keys and Bramley House.
There were silver awards for both the town's hostelries, but sadly the other schemes failed to pick up an award thanks to stiff competition from other towns and villages across the Anglia region.
A spokesman for the Cross Keys said: "We are really pleased to be included in the Anglia in Bloom 2022 awards and we would also like to congratulate The Bramley House Hotel for an equal award.
"Times have been extremely hard for everyone and the unabated heat has made the xeriscaping (landscaping to reduce the need for irrigation) of flowers particularly challenging."
Benwick was also celebrating success in the village category with the volunteers delighted to pick up a silver gilt after all their hardwork this summer.
However, they found themselves against champions thanks to the participation of Filby in their group who not only picked up gold, but when on to be crowned the overall winners of Anglia in Bloom for 2022.
Wisbech, which has seen massive success in the competition in the past did not participate this year as a town. However, it did enjoy some success with a special online graveyards campaign which saw the Octogan Graveyard pick up a 73% high silver.
The judges visited all our local entries in July and the awards were announced at the much-anticipated awards ceremony held at Orsett Hall in Essex on Wednesday.
