Fenland Business Awards: Harry Turner named Apprentice/Trainee of the Year

The Fenland Apprentice or Trainee Award is all about celebrating the area’s rising stars and there is no doubt the winner is going places.

Harry Turner may only be 20 but he knows exactly where he is heading, and that is straight for the top, and it doesn’t get much bigger in his business world than the Masters.

Currently in charge of maintaining the greens at Tydd St Giles Golf and Country Club, Harry is aiming high and hopes to one day be looking after some of the world’s most famous courses - possibly St Andrews or across the pond in America.

He was absolutely thrilled to be announced the category winner by judge Iain Kirkbright, of Chaos Internet Ltd, who also runs Sunlounger Travel.

Harry has been at Tydd since he was 16 and has progressed up through the ranks so well that when his mentor left for pastures new he stepped up to become head greenkeeper, managing five people.

He is hoping the Fenland course will provide him with the skills he needs to eventually launch him on to bigger and better things in the future.

Presenting the award, which was sponsored by the College of West Anglia with principal David Pomfrett also on stage, Iain highlighted the importance of apprenticeships and said they are very dear to his heart when it comes to his own businesses and helping young people onto the path of a successful career.

He said both Harry and his fellow finalist Brooke Reeves of Swann Edwards Architects were fantastic young people, but said that Harry, with his ambitious career plans, fulfilled the categories aim which was to not only recognise the rising stars of tomorrow, but also those who have made an exceptional contribution to their workplace and have demonstrated commitment to personal development and dedication to career progression.
