For most of us, Christmas is a time to relax and take it easy. But along with hospitals, doctors, police and the fire service, Anglian Water has staff on call throughout the most wonderful time of the year, ready to respond in case of an emergency.

Even though the weather outside is frightful, the water company's operational staff will be dashing through the snow to ensure water pipes and sewers are working as normal this Christmas.

The message to Anglian Water customers is to sleep in heavenly peace, relax and enjoy a Christmas without worry as the company's on-call staff have it covered.

While Christmas lunches are devoured and everyone enjoys their day, staff will be ready in case of any emergencies; giving customers peace of mind and ensuring everything goes off without a hitch.

Dan Sansby, a water network technician, said: "Christmas is a time for friends and family to get together and the last thing we want is people having problems with their water. That's why I'll be on standby on Christmas Day to make sure taps keep flowing as normal.

"I don't mind being called out; it's all part of my job. If something were to happen, I would rather be out with my colleagues making sure it doesn't ruin someone's special day. Just like everyone else, we want to enjoy our Christmas dinner with the family so we'll work as fast as we can to make sure water is back on quickly. Our team is really dedicated and we just want to do our bit to ensure our customers have a great day."

Abigail Harper, a water network technician, said: "I am on call this Christmas to make sure that we respond to any emergency calls that may come in, such as burst water mains, flooding, or a ‘no water' call.

"Nobody wants to be without water on Christmas Day so I'm happy to give up my time to help others. It also benefits other colleagues in my team and allows then time to enjoy Christmas with their families without having to worry about work.

"The priority on Christmas Day is to try and solve the problem as quickly as possible. So if I can restore supplies and minimise any disruption so our customers can enjoy their day, I will. It gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing I've helped people during the festive season."

With many homes across the region cooking turkey for their Christmas dinner, it's important to make sure drains are kept clear too. Each turkey produces a staggering three-quarters of a pint of fat, and many people end up on the naughty list for wrongfully disposing of it down the kitchen sink, causing blockages in sewers and pipes.

That's why water recycling maintenance technicians like Stefan Sadnani, are on call over Christmas ready to help customers with blocked drains and sewers.

He said: "It's really important we continue to provide a service to our customers even on Christmas Day because sometimes the worst can happen. Like the guys looking after burst pipes, we manage the sewer network to ensure that we can do all we can to prevent any problems over Christmas.

"This year is my first Christmas on call and I'm glad I can play my part. I don't have any kids so I volunteered so that my colleagues that do, are able to enjoy time with their families. I'm happy to give up my time over Christmas if it means I can ensure everyone has a great day!"

Anglian Water's customer service and social media teams will also be on hand over the Christmas period to help with any emergencies and keep customers updated.

Jane Taylor, head of customer services, said: "We understand how important it is for our customers to be able to contact us easily, so as well as our 24/7 operations contact centre, we'll also be available on Twitter and Facebook over the Christmas period. Our teams are on hand 365 days of the year so don't hesitate to contact us should you need us.

"If you see a leak, or have a problem with your supply, please give us a call on our emergency line on 03457 145 145 which is manned 24/7 throughout Christmas and New Year. For billing, we are available every day besides Christmas Day itself, call us on 03457 919 155."
