Hilary Butler among first to make a splash as March swimming pool reopens
A Fenland swimming pool finally opened its doors this week after being closed for nearly three months.
The George Campbell Leisure Centre in March saw its pool closed on December 16 for repairs, and it was due to open before the New Year.
However, workers found other work that needed doing and as a result the closure was much longer than Freedom Leisure, who operates the pool on behalf of Fenland District Council anticipated.
A short ceremony attended by Fenland and March councillors was held at the centre on Tuesday with Cllr Alex Miscandlon, the portfolio holder for leisure among them.
Afterwards, the pool reopened to the public and first off the blocks to make a splash was March resident Hilary Butler.
Hilary, who swims almost daily, was the first swimmer to take to the water when the town’s original outdoor pool opened 60 years ago, so it was fitting that she was among the first to take the plunge on Tuesday.
Now retired, Hilary, who was busy studying for her O-levels when the pool originally opened, went on to become a swimming teacher. She was delighted to finally get back in the swim of things now the pool is back up and running.
Cllr Miscandlon said: “I know it’s been frustrating, but I’m sure people will be glad to hear it is open.”
Freedom Leisure posted on the George Campbell’s website to say: “We truly appreciate your patience while we, in partnership with Fenland District Council have been working hard to improve our swimming pool and complete important maintenance works, we are now delighted to welcome you back.
“Thank you for your continued support and patience.”
