Historic ‘hidden’ Chatteris property which sits on site of former soft drinks brewery goes on the market
A historic property which sits on the site of a former ginger beer brewery has gone on the market.
Milking Hill House in Chatteris dates back to 1830 and used to house people who worked in the brewery.
The five-bedroom property has gone on the market for £710,000 and is available to view.
The soft drinks made at the former brewery were sold and delivered to the citizens of Chatteris by horse and cart.
The accommodation spans across a three-acre site, which is central in the village, but hidden from view.
The yard where the property is situated was owned by the Porter family, who made drinks that retailed to pubs, beer houses, shops and private dwellings in Chatteris.
According to the Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network, the bottles containing the drinks were prized by the children of the town, primarily because they were sealed by an ‘alley’ locked into the neck of the bottle during the glass manufacturing process.
Examples of these bottles can be seen in the Chatteris Museum.
The property has a number of skylight windows which have since been installed as well as a pair of French doors.
