March mum and daughter's mission to feed needy families and they want to do more
A kind-hearted mum and daughter are doing their bit to see that needy families, especially children and the elderly, are not going hungry.
Keen cook, Caroline Dove and her daughter Becky Ward, are offering free ‘hot hearty meals’ straight from the kitchen to people in the March area who are struggling - and they want to cook more!
Caroline’s Hot Food currently cooks up to 40 meals twice a week and would like to be able to help more people so Becky is out and about promoting the service.
“No-one, especially a child, should have an empty stomach. We want to make sure it doesn’t happen,” she said.
Becky knows what it is like to have a tough time.
The mum of two got out of an abusive relationship but was left in debt and, at one time, was forced to use a foodbank because she was finding it hard to make ends meet.
The experience made her aware and determined to help others who were struggling – so she called for her mum’s help and between them they launched the meals service.
“We set it up in memory of my nan, Gertrude Crane, who was 86 when she died,” said Becky.
Caroline does all of the cooking in her own kitchen and the couple fund it themselves, with help from donations of food and generous discounts from local businesses.
“Sometimes it looks as if mum is cooking for an army,” said Becky.
“She has meals ready to be collected by noon on Wednesdays and Fridays.
“They are in containers so just need to be taken away and reheated. We do hearty stuff like sausage and mash and spaghetti bolognese and we use fresh ingredients so it’s all very healthy.”
Becky said she hates the idea of people going hungry and hopes that these meals will be of some help.
She added that they are even prepared to do special food for babies if necessary.
She has been distributing pamphlets and would love to hear from more people who might welcome the service.
