If Easter Tree proposal by Wisbech Lithuanian community is proved by councillors residents could see new festive cheer in town centre

Some Easter cheer could come to town, with a new event planned for residents and schoolchildren to get involved with.

At the meeting of Wisbech Town Council on Monday, the Mayor, Sidney Imafidon, mentioned an Easter Tree proposal from the town's Lithuanian community.

The proposal was an idea that could give the town a ‘cosy and festive atmosphere’ by having an Easter tree in a public space in Wisbech to encourage community involvement and creativity.

The tree would be decorated with Easter symbols, with schools, community centres, local artists and residents invited to create decorations. It would include eco-friendly and recyclable materials.

He said possible benefits would be a festive atmosphere that will delight residents and visitors, community spirit, creativity and active participation in the life of the town, an opportunity to attract sponsors and local businesses that could contribute to the project and it could become an annual tradition, further strengthening the area's identity.

Councillors seemed to think this was a good idea to bring people together.

Cllr Peter Human said: “We got to know the Lithuanian community very well, they are well known for their celebrations throughout, probably a lot more than we do.

He is all for the Easter tree but as long as it does not cost the council anything he said.

Cllr Daljit Roy said: “As long as it does not cost the council anything, things that promote cultural diversity in the town are a good thing and I would be happy to support that.”

Cllr Steve Tierney was also all for the proposal, saying: “I do think we have a diverse community and if we can find ways to link together in a happy way, that helps everyone get along together.

“We can show this is a positive thing.”

Cllr Thomas Read added: “Judging by the Lithuanian community's involvement in the Rose Fair last year, I don't think we have a problem. They did a splendid job.”

Councillors were happy with the idea of the Easter Tree but wanted to go back to the Lithuanian community to finalise all the final details before making a decision.
