International Food Festival held in Wisbech to celebrate diverse cultures

Foodies were in a world of bliss at a food festival held for the first time since the Covid pandemic.

On Saturday, an international food festival took place at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech, organised jointly by Fenland Cultural Partnership, the Ferry Project, Cambridgeshire County Council, and the centre itself to celebrate the diverse communities in the town.

On the day there were between 15-18 stalls with a variety of cuisines including South African and South Korean.

Veronika Lukoseviciude, an organiser of the event, said the main idea was to get all the people and all the different communities together.

“As we know, Wisbech is known for loads of communities and different nationalities, so it is all about getting together, seeing what different cultures are about, and eating free food,” Veronika said.

“I am Lithuanian so I would go for the Lithuanian food because they are going to have potatoes, fried bread with garlic and cheese.”

Everybody was welcome to join in on the day for free and people who were cooking from communities had funding from the Fenland Culture Fund

Veronika added: “We had funding from them so we can pay back expenses they spend on the food so nobody is out of pocket.

“I would say this event is a trial for a bigger festival at the end of September/beginning of October which will be the harvest festival.”

Wisbech Mayor Peter Human attended the day to show his support and to try the array of food.

Peter said: “Wisbech being a multi-cultural society, I think it is a fantastic event .I have had the pleasure of not only opening the event but also sampling some of the wonderful continental food we have here which is a great tribute to the people who have done it and the organisers.

“Cheese scones, although they are British, were very good, and some of the Indonesian food was really nice but it is very difficult to choose a favourite because I sampled quite a few.”
