Residents asked for their views on whether it’s time to switch to wheelie bins

Residents in the Suttons and Tydd area are being asked if they want to make the switch from bags to wheelie bins in what could be a major shakeup for the district’s waste and recycling collections.

South Holland District Council - whose jurisdiction includes Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge, Sutton St James, Sutton St Edmund and Tydd St Mary - on Monday kick-started a formal consultation on waste as part of a review into the current service.

With a mandatory weekly food waste collection set to be imposed from central Government in 2026, the council is looking into whether it’s time to make the change and end a situation where South Holland is the only authority in Lincolnshire not to have wheelie bins.

With food waste collected weekly, other collections could also become fortnightly.

The consultation runs until Sunday August 25, with the survey available via www.sholland.gov.uk/WasteSurvey.

There will also be consultation events on market days in Spalding, Holbeach, Crowland and Long Sutton in the next few weeks — and paper copies of the survey will be available at the reception in the district council’s Priory Road offices in Spalding.

There will also be a leaflet drop to every household in South Holland in a bid to ensure all residents have an opportunity to have their say.

The council says the ‘aims to identify potential areas for improvement, while ensuring the council collects residents’ waste and recycling as efficiently as possible’.

This could solve a long-running debate among residents, who have been torn over the need to change to bins.

Councillor Jack Tyrrell, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at South Holland District Council, said: "As a council, we recognise the importance of engaging with our community on matters that directly impact their daily lives. With the food waste collection changes on the horizon, we have an opportunity to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of our operations.

“We really value the input of our residents in shaping the future of our collections. The feedback we receive will play a crucial role in guiding our decisions and ensuring that the waste collection services we provide are tailored to meet the needs of our community.

“I would like to encourage as many people as possible to take part in this survey and share your thoughts and suggestions with us. This is your opportunity to have your say, so we can work towards building a more environmentally friendly and effective waste collection system for our district."

Leaflets in different languages will be available, and residents who are visually impaired will be able to access the survey by emailing info@sholland.gov.uk or calling 01775 761161. You can also use these details to raise any queries.
