Wisbech man Jamie Spicer gets brand new electric wheelchair thanks to fundraising efforts from Walsoken Village Hall and community

Community spirit was on full display as people rallied together to raise thousands for a man’s electric wheelchair.

Through bingo nights, disco events and business donations, Walsoken Village Hall has put up thousands for Wisbech man Jamie Spicer.

The money has gone towards buying him a brand new electric wheelchair, which was presented to him at a celebratory coffee morning.

Residents got the idea during the Wisbech Lions Club’s Santa run, where Jamie asked Father Christmas for the mobility aid.

The group then got in touch with the village hall, and volunteers set about the £2,500 task.

Some £950 was initially raised through one of the village’s popular Rob’s Bingo events.

A dance night, followed by donations from The Snack Shack in Wisbech, Bygones, Gagen's Butchers, 128 Bar Services and the Oasis Centre’s community coffee morning, gained a further £1,690.

Because more was raised than needed, the extra funds have paid for the chair to be serviced after a year, as well as accessories.

Peter Freeman, one of the volunteers who made it happen, said he was “so pleased” with what was done.

“Thank you to all who helped or donated in any way, it is so satisfying when a community pulls together,” he said.
