Jury still deliberating if Wisbech man David Newton is guilty of murdering neighbour Una Crown
A jury still has not yet made a decision as to whether a 70-year-old Wisbech man is guilty of murdering Una Crown.
Sitting at Cambridge Crown Court, the 12 members of the jury have now spent 14 hours deliberating if David Newton, of Magazine Close in Wisbech, is guilty of murdering his elderly widowed neighbour.
The four-week-long trial has been taking place because Newton denies the murder of Mrs Crown, who was stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest before her body was set on fire.
The 12 members of the jury came back into court this afternoon, when a foreman said, on the group’s behalf, that they have yet to agree on a verdict.
They have now left court for the day and will resume deliberating on Monday.
Mrs Crown, a retired postmistress, was found dead by her nephew on January 13, 2013.
Newton, who denies the murder, was charged last year after new forensic evidence found male DNA that matched his under some of Mrs Crown’s fingernail clippings.
He had previously been arrested twice in 2013 on suspicion of Mrs Crown’s murder but was released without charge.
When police officers first arrived at the scene, they initially treated Mrs Crown’s death as not suspicious.
