Keeping active as a family during lockdown
Being active together as a family is a great way to spend some quality time together, whilst reaping the benefits of being physically active. It can be fun and engaging for all ages!
Family Games
Family games are a wonderful way of being active together by either making up your own games or by following others.
You do not need to have a lot of equipment to play. Use what you have: socks, cushions, toys or recyclable boxes are great examples.
During lockdown, Active Fenland has shared Family Fun Games on our Facebook page, such as musical statues, animal movers, colour hunt or sock toss.
These can be played in a small area too, such as an indoor room or garden.
You can also find plenty of Disney-inspired games to play together on the Change4Life website.
Family workouts
If your family would like to complete a workout together there are some great ones to be found online.
Active Fenland have some free HIIT workouts on Youtube which would be great for families with older children.
For families with younger children then Joe Wicks, the body coach, is doing free daily PE lessons, or find his five minute movers or Active 8 videos too.
Marvel fans listen up. Les Mills have a free Marvel workout on Youtube where you can learn to move like Thor.
Or if dancing is your thing then check out the This Girl Can Disney Dance-Alongs to learn routines together.
Finally, if you are looking for something a little less energetic there is Cosmic Yoga on Youtube; this combines child-friendly themes with yoga and mindfulness.
Active Education
Why not combine activity with learning? There are ways of incorporating maths, English, geography, history and science into games.
For example, with a target game, why not add a points system and let the children do the adding up?
Or with the animal movers’ game, why not ask questions about the animal, or let the children describe it or learn new facts about it?
Treasure hunts with questions around geography, history or languages can be great also. Or simple throwing and catching, but every time someone catches, they say a word around a theme: for example different countries, mode of transport, food item, a sport etc.
Pre/Post Natal
For new, expectant families, or those with very young children Active Fenland are starting some free pre- and post-natal courses to help mums stay active.
These will be live virtual sessions for 10 weeks based around Pilate-style exercises, led by a qualified instructor. Plus they are also a great way to meet other mums in the group!
Pre-natal class: Mondays, 10-11am, via Zoom.
Post-natal class- Thursdays, 10-11am, via Zoom.
Sessions start week beginning June 1; but you can join anytime. Email activefenlandbookings@fenland.gov.uk for more information or to book a place.
Keep up to date with lots of different activities and resources by following the Active Fenland social media pages @ActiveFenland on Facebook and Instagram to get involved.
