LETTER: Wisbech has abysmal provision for cyclists
I am writing to highlight the abysmal provision for cyclists in the town of Wisbech, which is truly shocking.
Almost no cycle paths exist and those that do are not maintained so are difficult to follow.
I have never seen a family out on its bikes in Wisbech. I believe this is because it has become the status quo to accept that things are not safe. So people don’t try. Tragic.
I scan read the Council Climate Change and Environment Strategy. Part of its high level vision is for “Healthy residents with easy access to sustainable transportation to reach their communities.”
If that is the case, it needs to live its words, and get something done in Wisbech with regard to cycling. Easy access? What a joke.
Recently, funding was made available for works as a result of COVID to encourage cyclists and walkers. Other places nearby, such as March and Ely, got extensive works. Wisbech got three bike racks. Another joke.
I understand that a second tranche of COVID works will follow. Let’s hope Wisbech gets what it deserves.
People might spout nonsense that “Wisbech faces unique challenges” to block work. That is lazy thinking.
The centre of town might present challenges due to historical issues but I am talking about the whole of the town. If people state that it isn’t possible to improve things in the whole of Wisbech then they are idiots.
March is also a market town. From experience, I can tell you that cycling around it is a pleasure. Lots of well signposted bike routes used by young and old. Why is there such a difference in towns so close together?
Can I call on people not to accept this.
As individuals, please challenge the status quo and call for change. You deserve better.
And if you are in a position that can affect change with regard to this matter, don’t be passive. You have a responsibility to do better for the people you serve.
We need to ensure that there is a short, medium and long term plan to make things better and not accept that “things must always be so.”
