Leverington man who had 'appalling compliance with court orders' given suspended jail term
A Leverington man who has never held a driving licence tried to walk away after police spotted him behind the wheel.
Kieron Lee Newman was a disqualified driver when he drove at speed along Gaywood Avenue in King’s Lynn, turning into Tennyson Avenue.
Officers stopped him trying to walk off and he immediately admitted that the Vauxhall Corsa was his girlfriend’s and he was a banned driver.
A small amount of cannabis was found in the car and Newman failed a roadside drug wipe. However, a later evidential test did not show he was over the specified limit.
Newman, of Leafere Way, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, having no insurance and possession of one gram of cannabis.
The court was told he was banned from driving for three years in 2017 for drug-driving.
Mitigating, solicitor Alison Muir said Newman and a pal had been rendering the outside of a house.
He had taken the friend home and was returning his girlfriend’s car.
She also referred to the death of another friend of his in a car crash recently. He was due to be attending the funeral on Friday.
Miss Muir added: “The one thing that should make him buck his ideas up is the loss of his friend.”
A probation officer said Newman had “appalling compliance with court orders” and he needed a curfew to protect the public.
She said: “He’s never taken a test so he’s unqualified with no insurance on our roads.”
Newman was given 12 weeks’ custody, suspended for a year, and a 5pm-5am curfew for 12 weeks.
He was banned from driving for 16 months and told to pay £115 victim surcharge and £40 costs.
There was no separate penalty for the insurance offence but his licence will be endorsed.
