Local MP promises to fight plans for a waste incinerator in Wisbech

Brexit secretary and local MP Steve Barclay says he is 'strongly opposed' to an incinerator being built in Wisbech and has promised to 'see it off'.

Mr Barclay, who is seeking re-election as North East Cambs MP on December 12, said: "I strongly oppose this mega incinerator which will involve 300 lorry movements a day on our Fenland roads as the proposal will involve both residential and commercial waste from up to two hours drive away being brought in.

"I have spoken to the firm this morning (Friday) to state my concerns including the fact it is just 500 metres away from the largest secondary school in Fenland, is on the same road as Unity Academy, Fenland gym, and Lakers gym.

"The size of the incinerator proposed is double the size of the one in Plymouth and it is clearly wholly inappropriate that waste from two hours drive away should be brought to Fenland and impact on our roads in such a way, particularly near to the Thomas Clarkson Academy.

"I saw the last one off, and I will see this one off," added Mr Barclay.
