On May 17 Wisbech Town Council held its first Sunday market and car boot event.

It comprised of a traditional market (of the type operated by the council on the other six days of the week) accompanied by a car boot sale.

Wisbech Town Council has desires to improve its markets offer to the public, as well as playing its part in enhancing the vibrancy and vitality of Wisbech town centre for the benefit of all of those who use Wisbech as a place to live, work or visit.

It is felt that the operation of a Sunday market and associated car boot event on Wisbech Market Place accords with those ambitions.

The Wisbech Town Council Sunday market operates weekly between 9am and 2pm, with traders’ and sellers’ access to the Market Place being available from 6.30am.

The market traders book their pitches with the council in the same way as for the other daily markets operated by Wisbech Town Council; the allocation of pitches to those wishing to sell items as part of the car boot event is done on a first-come, first-served basis on the day.

Those trading from a car boot pitch will be permitted to sell used goods only.

The launch of the new Sunday market coincided with the annual Love Your Local Market (LYLM) event, which ran between May 13 and 23.

Once again, Wisbech Town Council participated in the LYLM national event by having Country and Western themed entertainment and activities in association with the markets on Saturdays May 16 and 23.

These themed markets proved very successful; many visitors attending the market were seen dancing to the musical entertainment and being thrown off the Rodeo Bull.

The Town Council’s Festivals Working Party, which comprises members and officers of Wisbech Town Council and members of the local community, has been meeting over recent months to put in place arrangements for a programme of festivals and events for the community.

The next one of those events is the annual Wisbech Festival, which will take place on Wisbech Market Place between noon and 6pm on Sunday, June 7.

There will be a fun-packed programme of entertainment and activities throughout, including:

n Live music and dance

n The annual Wisbech karaoke championships

n Fairground rides

n Makeovers and hairdressing

n Face painting
