King's Lynn man Alef Mehmed caught drink driving while using a mobile phone the day after a night out
A man who decided to drive the afternoon after a night out was stopped by police for driving while using his mobile phone.
Alef Mehmed, 36, of Hall Road, Clenchwarton, appeared at Lynn's Magistrates Court on Thursday where he admitted to the two offences of using a mobile phone and driving a vehicle above the specified alcohol limit.
It follows an incident which occurred on Tuesday, January 31, where officers spotted Mehmed driving in Emneth while on his phone.
Police stopped the Vauxhall that he was driving and reported that Mehmed was immediately apologetic for his actions.
A roadside breathalyser test was conducted and Mehmed provided a reading of 43mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mg.
His solicitor, Ruth Johnson said that Mehmed had been celebrating the night before with friends and he felt able to drive the following afternoon.
She went on to explain that Mehmed works as a delivery driver in Wisbech and that his job is in jeopardy with the mandatory driving ban that comes with the drink driving offence.
"While the case of drink driving is never easy, it's particularly hard for this man," said Ms Johnson.
Magistrates gave Mehmed a 14-month driving disqualification and a fine of £223 with an added victim surcharge fee of £89 and court costs of £105.
He was also given the opportunity to take a drink drive awareness course to lower his disqualification.
