Wisbech driver jailed for causing serious injury by dangerous driving

A Wisbech man with a provisional licence described his driving as "normal" after a collision which left a woman with life-changing injuries.

A court heard how George Andronache, 32, of Cannon Street, drove at high speed after leaving work, leading to an accident that seriously injured two of his colleagues.

Andronache was jailed for three years after a hearing at Peterborough Crown Court on Wednesday (September) having pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and possession of an offensive weapon.

The court heard how, at about 6am on July 16, 2019, Andronache finished his shift at a packaging factory in New Bridge Lane, Wisbech, along with several other colleagues.

He then got into his Hyundai Tucson car and drove out of the car park before accelerating when he reached the road.

It was stated that Andronache crashed into parked cars along the side of the road, crushing a 30-year-old woman who had been getting into her car.

A 61-year-old woman who was on the pavement was also injured when she was struck by one of the parked cars.

Both women were taken to hospital, with the 30-year-old having suffered a multitude of life-changing injuries that require ongoing care.

The older woman also suffered serious injuries to her arms and was unable to work for more than three months.

A search of Andronache's car by police resulted in a metal extendable baton being seized.

However, in interview, the defendant could not account for the baton when he also said that he believed his driving was "normal".

As well as a jail term, Andronache was also disqualified from driving for four and a half years, with an extended re-test to be undertaken after this time.

After the court hearing, PC Ben Patten, of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: "There is no real explanation for why he decided to drive like this on this day but it shows that it only takes one moment of dangerous driving to destroy lives."
