Manufacturer from Chatteris recruits 10 apprentices following nuclear site deal
A manufacturer has taken on 10 apprentices after securing a multi-million pound contract with the Sellafield nuclear site.
Metalcraft, of Chatteris Business Park, in Chatteris, says it has been able to taken on the youngsters as a result of winning the £47 million deal.
In order to be the best we must attract, nurture and retain the best talent.
The apprentices will develop skills across all areas of Metalcraft’s business, working on real-life projects including the Sellafield contract which involves providing waste storage containers for the decommissioning process.
The 10 are aged 16 and 17 and from Cromwell Community College and Neale Wade Academy.
Austen Adams, managing director at Metalcraft and who began his own career as an apprentice, said: “Much is writen about the shortage of skilled engineers to support the manufacturing industry across the UK but at Metalcraft, we’re putting our money where our mouth is.
He added: “In order to be the best we must attract, nurture and retain the best talent.
“Manufacturing requires highly-specialised skills that take time and significant resources to develop. The skills gap is not something that can be plugged overnight but we’re excited by the potential of our new apprentice intake.”
Metalcraft’s design and process engineering team has over 250 years’ combined experience, while its UK manufacturing facilities offer a heritage of nearly 170 years at the forefront of specialist vessel production.
The apprentices will develop their practical skills at the Fenland Engineering Skills Centre at Metalcraft’s Chatteris site.
They will complete a four-year programme that begins with a Level 2 Apprenticeship, providing a foundation in learning and an introduction to the manufacturing environment, before moving on to Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships in more specialist areas.
