March man Trevor Wright is gearing up to cycle 100 miles this weekend for a seal rescue centre

Trevor Wright, a volunteer for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), will be taking part in Prudential RideLondon this weekend (August 3/4) in support of the RSPCA’s wildlife centre in Norfolk.

He will be doing for seal pups like Unicorn who was admitted to the wildlife centre in June after he was rescued by Trevor, from Snettisham beach.

Worried passers-by contacted the BDMLR about Unicorn the tiny seal pup when they spotted her lost and alone on the beach.

RSPCA East Winch wildlife centre rehabilitates many animals like Unicorn who need care and attention.

Last year, the centre cared for 80 common seals and 85 grey seals and admitted a total of 4,485 wildlife casualties throughout last year and 2,121 so far this year (up to June).

Alison Charles, RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre manager, said: “We greatly appreciate Trevor’s support in fundraising for East Winch. Every mile he cycles and every pound he raises as a result will go towards helping wildlife just like Unicorn.

“Not only is Trevor giving up his time to take part in this challenge but he is also a volunteer for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue. Trevor gives up his time to save seals in desperate need of care and bring them to us. Without the help of people like Trevor we wouldn’t be able to rescue as many seals and see them released back to the wild.”

So far he has raised a total of £380 towards his £500 target and with just days to go the final push is on to raise the remaining funds.

Trevor, who lives in March, with his wife Stephanie and their two rescue cats, said: “I’ve been volunteering for the BDMLR for about a year and a half. We are mostly called out to rescue seal pups and 90 per cent of those rescued I transport to RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre for rehabilitation. The staff’s dedication and kindness for these wild animals is amazing. They are so brilliant and passionate. It’s amazing the amount of work that goes into helping these animals.”

During his time volunteering for the BDMLR, Trevor has rescued numerous seals up and down the Norfolk coast line.

Prudential RideLondon will see people choosing to cycle 100 or 46 miles through the city, starting at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Trevor, whose day-to-day job sees him work for the NHS Blood and Transplant, also volunteers for the Orangutan Foundation and has been to Borneo multiple times to see and witness orangutans first hand and the dangers they face.

He is a self proclaimed animal lover. He has two rescue cats, Joey who was dumped as a kitten and Luna, a Norwegian Forest cat who was found on a landfill site by his wife Steph. When Luna was found she was so small she could fit into the palm of a hand.
