March Marvels take on mighty challenge in North Norfolk hike
Saturday will be an early start for six of the March Marvels cricket team this weekend when they embark on a marathon walk in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The group will be heading to Cromer at 5am ready to join the North Norfolk Mighty Hike which sets off at 8.30am.
The six: Laura Johnson, Tanya Cornwell, Catherine Goakes, Jo Denson, Lois Hopkins and Ashlie Barnard, all have their own reasons for tackling the North Norfolk Mighty Hike.
It’s a challenge which they hope will raise at least £3,000 for the charity.
March Marvels skipper and county player Lois gave her reason for taking on the hike.
She said: “I have lost a lot of friends due to cancer and I’m doing it for them.”
Several other members of the walking team have lost close family members to cancer including Catherine and Jo.
Jo said: “My Dad died suddenly from cancer last year, and my Mum was diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and is responding well to immunotherapy. Cancer has had a huge impact on my family so this is a cause I really believe in.”
The team have been putting in the miles in recent weeks to get ready for the coastal trek, including completing a 20-mile walk.
Tanya said: “We have done lots of training walks which have usually ended in the pub for a celebratory drink. We are well prepared and ready for the mighty hike.”
The March Marvels cricket team only started playing in July 2021 and it’s their team ethic that has brought them success on and off the field.
Tanya added: “I have taken on this challenge because being a part of the March Marvels makes you feel that you can take on any challenge! The support within the group is incredible and I know that together we will ALL cross the finish line.
“So many people are affected by cancer, and it is such a good cause that’s supports families when they are at their most vulnerable. We can put our team spirit, camaraderie and enthusiasm into raising a significant amount of money for Macmillan Cancer Support. We are a team, and we will do this together.”
The last word ahead of next week’s marathon must go to the team’s inspirational captain Lois who concluded: “I’m incredibly proud of the team’s commitment and dedication to this incredibly worthy cause. The club have been fantastic and are backing us all the way”.
A recent quiz night at March Town Cricket Club to support the Macmillan Cancer charity raised £600.
