Maze, play tunnel, and bug hotel are all hopes for Chatteris’ Little Acre Pocket Park

Exciting changes to the Little Acre Pocket Park were unveiled at Chatteris Town Council on Tuesday night.

It is hoped that developer Persimmon Homes, which is behind new homes being built off Doddington Road, will fund the cost of what is being proposed.

Sandie Mellors, a member of the Friends of Little Acre Pocket Park and a landscape gardener, has come up with some ideas to add to what is already available for visitors to enjoy.

Among the suggestions is a maze which would replace a dry-stone pond, and having LAPP spelt out in flowers on an embankment.

Other suggestions include a mound with a tunnel through it, a new and improved bug hotel, a new compost area, simple metal arches, and more wild flower planting to enhance that already in situ.

Clerk Jo Melton said the plans would enhance the park and it is hoped the money will come from the developer.

She added that a slide, suggested at February’s meeting, for the area known as Bill’s Hill, having been named after former mayor Bill Haggata, who died in January, was likely to cost around £5,000.

Mrs Melton said she had looked into the cost of providing the slide and was surprised at how expensive it was likely to be.

However, she said it could be Persimmon Homes would be happy to stump up some money towards the cost – “It depends how generous they are willing to be,” she said

Mrs Melton added in the meantime, a plaque naming the raised bund Bill’s Hill would be forthcoming, and if it was decided a slide would be too costly then a tree would be planted instead.

“I think what Sandie is suggesting will add very nicely to the park, we will just have to wait and see if we can get funding to help pay for the changes,” concluded Mrs Melton.
