Memorial planned for those who died at March in 1941 aircraft crash
I am in the process of trying to trace any living relatives of a Bomber Command crew who died whilst flying in a Wellington Mk 1c Z8863 of 115 Squadron from RAF Marham.
On November 24, 1941, during a training flight, the aircraft struck loaded coal wagons at the northern end of Whitemoor marshalling yard, sadly with the loss of all crew including three ground crew, who had joined the flight for some air experience.
Looking at the names of the crew AC2 Gordon Sydney Wakefield was one of the ground crew who joined the flight and sadly lost his life. Records show that he is buried/commemorated in Wisbech (Mount Pleasant) cemetery. His parents were Sidney and Hilda Vera Wakefield, of Wisbech.
I am part of a team who are well into the planning for a memorial to the crew who died on that date, and are looking to find living relatives to offer an invite to the unveiling/dedication of the memorial once completed. It is hoped that this will happen later this year, but the date is yet to be confirmed.
If anyone has any information on the family of AC2 Gordon Sydney Wakefield, I can be contacted on the following email address, wellingtonz8863@gmail.com
