Mercy visit to sick mum lands Wisbech driver with a 12 month ban and a £190 in fines and costs
A Wisbech man driving to see his sick mother was three times the limit for cannabis.
Brandon Rooprai was also driving unsupervised on a provisional licence and had no insurance when
he was stopped by police in Old Market Place on February 21.
“The officer could smell cannabis in the car,” said prosecutor Jane Walker at King’s Lynn Magistrates’
Court on Thursday. “When asked about the smell, the defendant produced a cannabis grinder.”
Rooprai failed a drug wipe and was arrested. He later gave an evidential test showing 6.3
microgrammes per litre of blood of a cannabis derivative. The specified limit is two.
The 21-year-old, of Norwich Road, pleaded guilty to drug-driving, driving otherwise than in
accordance with a licence and having no insurance.
In mitigation, Rooprai said: “I was just going to visit my mum. She was having a bad day and I was
just going there to help.”
For drug-driving, he was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £120 and told to pay £40 costs
and £30 victim surcharge. There were no separate penalties for the two other offences but his
licence will be endorsed.
