Middle Level Commissioners plan two navigation closures on local waterways for important work
Boaters are being warned of closures to two planned closures of navigation locks on the Middle Level waterways in Fenland.
Whilst most Wisbech residents will be familiar with the tidal waters of the Nene, within a short distance of the town, and once connected by the Wisbech canal are the 160km of navigable waters in the Middle Level of the Fens.
The Middle Level Commissioners are the navigation authority for the waterways here, that are an important connection between the River Nene at Peterborough and the River Great Ouse at Salters Lode.
Licensed boat numbers are on the increase year on year and the Commissioners are reinvesting the income directly into operating, maintaining and improving the navigation.
Over the coming months there are two planned closures of navigation to facilitate important works: Closure of Marmont Priory Lock to replace the downstream gates from October 30 to December 19.
Closure of Salters Lode Lock to clear silt and undertake a condition assessment is planned from January 8 to February 9 next year.
Further information about the closures is available: https://middlelevel.gov.uk/
Paul Burrows, chief executive said: “I would say this but the Middle Level navigation is a gem, a jewel of the Fens and much more than just a link route between the Nene and Great Ouse.
“I am looking to develop a business plan for our navigation and the refurbishment of our locks is an important part of our commitments to the boating community.”
