MP Steve Barclay hands over 3,000 signature petition against 'flawed' Wisbech incinerator plans
Local MP Steve Barclay delivered a petition signed by more than 3,000 people opposed to plans to build a mega incinerator in Wisbech.
Mr Barclay delivered the 77 page document to Paul Carey, managing director MVV Environment, the German-based company which is looking to build a 54 mega-watt waste burning incinerator on land off Algores Way.
The North East Cambridgeshire MP, who has pledged his opposition to what he describes as a "flawed scheme", attended one of MVV's consultation events at the Rosmini Centre on Saturday.
He said the petition is just part of the campaign against the incinerator, which has also seen protestors outside venues where MVV have been holding its statutory consultation events in recent weeks.
Mr Barclay said: "The consultation this morning has left a host of questions unanswered. There can be little doubt that this is a flawed scheme and l spoke to the developer about some of the inconsistencies in their application.
"Their responses were underwhelming. I also heard from numerous local residents who I would like to thank for coming out to register their opposition.
"I will continue to fight for constituents against this mega incinerator and know it is causing much worry to residents and businesses in the area. I will set out next week a number of concerns identified with the developer’s site selection, design, environmental study and other aspects of this flawed scheme."
Meanwhile another petition opposing the plans has been launched by resident Elly Short after she attended one of the consultations and it has already gathered over 1,200 signatures.
