Mural will honour Chatteris’ three boxing champs
Three local boxing heroes are to be honoured with a specially commissioned mural.
Chatteris Town Council has approved spending £1,350 on the artwork, which will be created in the town’s bus shelter opposite the police station in East Park Street.
Councillors agreed to spend the money after receiving a quote from well-known street artist Nathan ‘Nyces’ Murdoch, who is based in Peterborough.
Nathan, who has a massive following online both nationally and internationally, is already known to many in Chatteris thanks to the mural he created for Paul and Linda Fuller on the wall of their garage in St Martins Road, last year.
Councillor Sue Unwin had previously suggested a new mural was needed for the bus shelter, which belongs to Fenland District Council, and thought a picture of Jordan Gill, who has held various titles including Commonwealth Featherweight, European Featherweight and the WBA International Featherweight titles, would be a good idea.
However, fellow councillors thought it would be better to honour all three of the town’s famous boxers, the other two being Dave ‘Boy’ Green and Eric Boon.
Dave ‘Boy’ Green was the European Welterweight Champion and also both the British and European Super-Lightweight champion. He was a prominent fighter in the 1970s/1980s.
Eric Boon, who also hails from Chatteris, was nicknamed the Fen Tiger and had a total of 119 fights winning 92. He became the British Lightweight Champion in 1938 and held it for three years.
It was agreed to the mural depicting all three fighters and Nathan was approached for a quote following a previous meeting.
Last night councillors accepted the quote and it was agreed the mural should go ahead subject to permission from Fenland District Council as owners of the bus shelter.
