New 20mph signs call agreed for Whittlesey estate

New 20mph road signs are needed following a new development in Whittlesey.

Town councillors agreed at their recent monthly meeting to write to Cambridgeshire highways asking for the signs to be installed on Teal Road at the entrance to the Hartley Grange estate.

Cllr Chris Boden raised the issue and pointed out that while the 20mph had been in place on the ‘bird estate’ for some time, there was no sign at the Skaters Street junction, which meant it could not be properly enforced.

Members agreed that new signs were needed and to write a formal letter to the highways team asking them to be installed as soon as possible.

Cllr Boden said: “We don’t want them to agree to install them sometime in the future, they need to be installed as soon as possible.”

Councillors also heard there were problems with drivers using the road through the Hartley Grange development as a rat run.

Cllr Boden said the speed was of some cars was also a concern.

He said the council had tried to argue to make Teal Road a no throughway, but the calls had been ignored.

“Now we have cars using it as a rat run, and the speed of some of the cars is worrying. Basically, what we feared would happen has happened,” said Cllr Boden.

He said at the moment it is only cars, but it was only a matter of time before HGVs also started to use the rat run.

Cllr Boden wanted to have a movable speed warning sign installed to warn drivers of their speed.

He said: “It will not stop all drivers from speeding, but about half will slow down if there is a sign slashing their speed. In all honesty it is the drivers who are only doing a few miles over the speed limit who take notice, but that is better than none.”

It was agreed to write to Cambridgeshire highways asking them to suggest a suitable lamp post for the mobile vehicle activated sign to be installed.
