New Director of Public Health appointed for Cambridgeshire
A new director of public health has been appointed to drive improvements in the health and well-being of the residents of Cambridgeshire.
Sally Cartwright will join Cambridgeshire from a similar role at Luton Borough Council, where she has provided strong strategic leadership to develop the delivery of priorities post-covid, including leading Luton to become the first Marmot, health equity, town.
The Director of Public Health is responsible for identifying and improving the health and well-being of residents, reducing inequalities in health outcomes, and protecting local communities from public health hazards, such as infectious diseases and environmental threats.
Sally will lead the work as a key corporate leader of the county council, the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA), NHS and other partners to prevent, prepare, and respond to these health threats.
Sally will take up the director of public health role in Cambridgeshire County Council in January 2025.
Councillor Richard Howitt, chair of Cambridgeshire county council’s adults and health committee said: “We are delighted to be welcoming someone of Sally’s calibre and expertise to Cambridgeshire.
“Her breadth of experience will be crucial as we move forward in separating the public health functions of Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council, addressing the health inequalities across our communities.
“I know she will be a great addition to the team, whilst keeping the health and well-being of the residents of Cambridgeshire as her key focus.”
Sally Cartwright added: “I am so pleased to have been appointed into the role of director of public health for Cambridgeshire.
“Although sad to say goodbye to a fantastic team in Luton, I am really looking forward to the new challenge - working with the Cambridgeshire public health team, wider council, and partners to make a difference for the population across Cambridgeshire.”
