A Fenland pre-school has been saved from closure after an 11th hour appointment.

Wisbech St Mary Pre-School was facing the prospect of its final term and put out an urgent appeal to find a new manager.

But luckily the governing body conducted interviews and appointed the new manager just hours before an extra-ordinary meeting was due to take place.

New manager Annabel Price will be taking over the helm of the pre-school in September.

Chairman of the governors Abi Payne is thrilled that the pre-school will remain open.

She said: “We can all breathe a sigh of relief.

“It is fantastic that the pre-school can remain open. No-one wanted it to shut, so this is fantastic news.

“Everyone is over the moon and is looking forward to Annabel starting in September.

“She is bubbly and full of life and raring to get to grips with it all.

“We are eager for her to start and look forward to a bright future for the pre-school.”

The school has been helping to educate village youngsters for the last 36 years and currently has 38 children, aged between two and five, on its books. It also employs seven people, who will now keep their jobs.

The school was left in the precarious position after the previous manager retired earlier and numerous attempts to find a replacement were fruitless.

But following an appeal in the Fenland Citizen, the pre-school received a total of 18 applications and interviewed seven candidates on Thursday.

The governing body had organised an extra-ordinary meeting later that day, which was called to make the final decision on closing the school if a new manager had not been found.

Luckily the board was able to cancel this after Annabel had accepted the job.

Mrs Payne said: “We could not officially cancel the meeting until someone had accepted the post.

“We have also had offers of help from retired managers who would like to volunteer at the pre-school. It has been a lovely response.”

Wisbech St Mary has had a pre-school in the village since 1982 but the group has only been in its current building in Churchgate Way since 2000.

The pre-school has strong links to Wisbech St Mary Primary School.

Staff at the pre-school help youngsters to learn through play.

Its curriculum aims to help children develop physically and emotionally.
