New patient helpdesk for Cambridgeshire people with queries around hospital waiting times
Patients in Cambridgeshire with queries or concerns around a hospital or community appointment they are waiting for can now contact a new helpline.
Open Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, patients can contact the freephone patient helpdesk on 0800 048 5800 if they have queries regarding their:
• hospital or community outpatient appointment
• appointment for hospital tests (such as scans)
• date for an operation or other treatment
• follow-up from your hospital team
Helpdesk staff will be able to check their referral and follow up questions or concerns if required. The patient helpdesk will work alongside the Hospital Trust patient advice services and patients are advised to still liaise with their relevant hospital team as necessary.
Dr Gary Howsam, chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group and a local GP said “The COVID-19 pandemic has added to the strain on all NHS services. As a result of this, waiting list times for hospital outpatient and specialist appointments and procedures have increased for everybody which we understand can be unsettling and cause additional worry for patients.
“The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Patient Helpdesk has been set up to provide assistance, updates and support for patients, for example, advice on likely waiting times, helping patients to navigate NHS treatment pathways or to provide reassurance that they have not been forgotten or lost in the system.”
“The Patient Helpdesk will also help to alleviate pressure on our GP practices who are dealing with increased queries from patients regarding their appointments.
"Practices do not have access to hospital or community service waiting lists which can be frustrating for patients and GPs alike, the Helpdesk will now be able to deal with these queries enabling GP practices to focus on day to day patient care.”
Any patient who is concerned their condition has deteriorated is still encouraged to contact their GP Practice so you can be reviewed by one of the practices clinical team to enable appropriate action to be taken.
The Patient Helpdesk is currently funded to run until the end of March 2022 when it will be reviewed.
