No action is possible over car sales on Chatteris housing estate
Town councillors were dismayed to learn there was nothing they could do to help residents of a housing estate blighted by car sales.
Chatteris mayor Cllr Anne Hay told members at Tuesday night’s meeting that she had been approached by residents of Furrowfields complaining about parking on the estate.
She said residents were concerned about one resident selling cars and leaving vehicles parked in the road and on the Furrowfields car park, causing problems for other residents.
Cllr Hay asked Cllr Peter Murphy, a town councillor and also Fenland Council’s portfolio holder for refuse, cleansing, parks, and open spaces if there was anything the council could do to resolve the issue.
However, Cllr Murphy said if the cars are taxed and insured, then there is nothing that can be done about the situation, as they can be legally parked on the road.
When asked if anything could be done about the fact cars were being sold Cllr Murphy repeated the line about tax and insurance, and added: “You have to actually see it being done.”
He then said: “Anyone is entitled to sell a car.”
Cllr Hay said: “Sadly I will not be going back to the residents with any good news.”
