Time to get active!

Here's the fortnightly Get Active column, written by Hettie West, physical activity co-ordinator for Fenland District Council...

Life is as hectic all round as ever – and it’s easy for physical activity to be set aside and put on the back burner.

This autumnal period where the nights draw in and the mornings are still dark tends to feel very transitional so there’s no better time to get some new routines set in stone before the winter hits.

Let’s use this opportunity to take the first steps to living a more active lifestyle and try to get back to reaching our recommended daily activity guidelines, as set by the NHS: 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity/75 minutes vigorous intensity activity per week.

There’s plenty on offer around Fenland, but its important to find something that’s right for you, that you enjoy, so it doesn’t feel like a chore, that fits into your lifestyle and daily routine.

Most important of all, it’s important to start your journey with physical activity in a way that suits you and is appropriate to your abilities.

Starting slowly with a 10-minute brisk walk each day and gradually building up to include a jog, some gym classes or some team sports is a great way to increase your physical activity slowly but surely without overdoing it and causing injury or burnout.

Active Fenland has a number of programmes on offer this Autumn, so there’s something to suit everyone- and all our sessions are ideal for beginners, try it outers and returners. Check some of them out below:
