Nominate your Fenland heroes for a Linking Hands Charity UK's Hearts of Gold Award
Do you know someone who deserves recognition for what they have been doing during the pandemic?
Then you could nominate them for a Linking Hands Charity UK's Hearts of Gold Awards 2021, which are open to anyone from across East Anglia including Fenland.
Steven Schooling, 58, from Wisbech St Mary, who runs the locally-based Linking Hands Charity with his wife Linda explained the aim is to recognise anyone who has helped others.
And he said nominations can also include groups and organisations, as well as individuals. Animals that have provided comfort, company or have done something exceptional can also be put forward for an award.
He said: "Obviously people like doctors and nurses can be nominated for their heroic work in saving people's lives, but there are an awful lot of people who have helped others in small ways, like walking their dog, doing the shopping or simply picking the phone up for a chat, to check they are all right.
"We want to do something positive and shine a light on all those unsung heroes and the good they have done during these difficult times. There is so much negativity going on in the world, we thought it would be nice to do something to highlight all the good things."
Steven explained Linking Hands is a self-supported charity which offers a range of free services including bereavement counselling, alcohol and drug rehab, as well as cancer support.
He said: "We try to help people in whatever way we can. We have helped save two people's lives already this year, one of them from March.
"They were both struggling with mental health issues and were worried about everything, I just listened and lent them a friendly ear and it helped."
With the awards, which have been sponsored by SCS Business Awards Ltd and WEP Fabrications, there will be a winner - or maybe more depending on nominations - each month up to November and then in December there will be overall winners chosen from the monthly winners.
Winners will receive a personalised mug and a plaque to mark their success.
