NSPCC made 55 referrals following reports of children left home alone in Cambridgeshire
Children's charity made 55 referrals to external agencies in Cambridgeshire following reports of children being left home alone.
The figure comes after a Fenland mother was sentenced yesterday (Thursday) over the neglect of her two young sons.
The woman, in her thirties from the Wisbech area, who cannot be named for legal reasons was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for a year, after previously pleading guilty to two counts of doing an act of cruelty to a child.
She was caught after a school teacher visited the family home and it was discovered the boys aged seven and two were left unsupervised in September 2015.
A spokesman for the NSPCC said: “Children at a vulnerable age are dependent on the adults that care for them and it’s clear from this case that a parent has significantly neglected that duty.
“We all have a duty to look out for the welfare of children and the NSPCC Helpline is there to listen to adults with concerns about a child.
“Last year we made 55 referrals to external agencies in Cambridgeshire following reports of children being left home alone.”
"We are all responsible for reporting signs of neglect and abuse, if you’re concerned about a child please call the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.org.uk"
